Some time ago, I had decided to refrain from immediately acknowledging the passing of fraternity members, because suddenly, it seemed to be occurring with such rapidity that my articles could become morbid, as I would be caught in a perpetual focus on this subject. Also, I tend to subscribe to elements of the Buddhist/Hindu principle of karma, and irrationally hoped that by publicly ignoring them, I could somehow slow down the rate of industry persons' demise.

Professor Carolyn Cooper claimed in her column yesterday, 'Claiming Garvey and Rastafari', that Garvey would certainly endorse the inaugural Rastafari Studies conference hosted by the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the UWI, Mona this week. Garvey may possibly have been willing to endorse the conference for some reason, but not for the reason of affinity between himself and Rastafari on some critical points.

Sean Paul: Reggae Artist of Year/Decade

Music 'bible', Billboard, lists Sean Paul as the reggae artiste of the year and decade, whilst Shaggy's Hotshot was listed as the 15th most selling album of the 2000s. Paul beat Matisyahu and Bob Marley & the Wailers for second and third respectively for 2009 artiste of the year based on just released chart data from Billboard, the US based music company. For artiste of the decade the order of the runners-up was reversed with Marley taking second to Paul. In 2008, the late Bob Marley was the top act followed by Collie Buddz and Stephen Marley. Billboard stated that the top reggae artiste of the decade ranking was based on an artiste's chart performance. During the year Sean Paul hit number one on the charts and sold slightly more copies than Matisyahu, however neither artiste surpassed 80,000 units in the US market.

Below we’ve provided excerpts from the original article (which can be viewed here), which reads something like the script from a movie (described by a police spokesperson), with Banton allegedly at one point tasting a sample [as if to test quality] from a one kilo package of cocaine. Notably, it’s apparent that Banton was not actually at the scene of the alleged final transaction which led to the arrest of his alleged co-conspirators. "Hopefully Kartel, Mavado and anyone else who will like to join in the peace initiative will take the stage ... I would love to see that," Laing told Splash.

It has not been a good year for Jamaican pop music. Sales tracker, SoundScan, reports that music buyers in the United States showed little interest in what Jamaican artistes had to offer in 2009. SoundScan has released sales figures to the end of October. It said, collectively, reggae/dancehall music sold just 502,171 units for the first 10 months of the year.

Leading the way was Sean Paul's Imperial Blaze album with sales of 70,917. That is a massive drop from sales of The Trinity, his previous album, which sold over three million copies. The Trinity spawned the hit singles Temperature and We Be Burnin'. It was a strong follow-up to 2002's Dutty Rock which sold more than five million units.

"He was a massive crossover success in the United States, thanks to an openly commercial hybrid of reggae and hip hop commonly known as reggae fusion, and also to prominent duet partners like Maxi Priest, Johnny Gill, and KRS-One". "All of this brought him several hit singles and albums on the U.S. R&B chart in the early 1990s, and made him the first dancehall artist to win a Grammy Award". "Ranks' distinctive, booming growl of a voice earned him many imitators, and his sex-obsessed lyrics — while drawing criticism for their unrelenting "slackness" — made him one of dancehall's hottest sex symbols".

Beenie Man is the latest star act lined up for the January 15 festival in Auckland.

Vybz Kartel & Bounty Killer At War!

Popular Dancehall DJs Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer have entered a recent lyrical war over their personal disputes. The two haven't been on good terms ever since Kartel left Bounty's Alliance entourage approximately two years ago. Bounty, who credits himself as the founding force behind Kartel's rise to fame, recently released two diss tracks entitled "Chatterbox" and "Ungrateful Hellbwoy" which have created quite a buzz in the dancehall world. Kartel counteracted with the track "Bownty's Killa" very shortly after, and it can be expected that the two will continue their lyrical battles over the next few weeks, possibly months. Their dispute may very well become the feature argument for Sting 2009, a stage show that is notorious for showcasing a showdown between the artists behind dancehall's most heated recent confrontation.

They got that and much, much, much more, as Buju was an extremely engaging storyteller in detailing, at length, his entry into music business, early career and subsequent harsh spiritual experiences in Europe in 1993 which led to the landmark Til Shiloh. His observations on himself were sharp and uncompromising ("I am talented in your estimation, but if I did brown I would be more talented. I know who I am in this society."). So was his assessment of appreciation for Jamaican music, saying that he didn't want it to be assessed on the basis of someone who died many years ago, but on "living human beings like me who are working …".

At last Thursday evening's symposium to announce a list of top 100 Jamaican popular songs at the University of the West Indies, Mona's Undercroft, Herbie Miller brought the large audience "peace, love and harmonious greetings from the revitalised Jamaica Music Museum (JAMM)".

It proved to be an introduction for many to the museum, although the idea has been around for almost a decade. Miller emphasised that he called it "revitalised" because "it's not new. It was established eight years ago but was underdeveloped and underpromoted because of one reason or another. It just never got off the ground".

Reggaelution Interview: Gyptian

It was a drastically different atmosphere on each end of the line as I listened to Gyptian’s words from the rainy skies of Kingston, Jamaica. Gyptian, in a hotel in New York, and I, in Red Hills, had a lot to discuss. After all, the singing sensation has been quite busy since his sophomore album release under VP records a few weeks ago. “New York cold like ice,” Gyptian said to me, with refreshing warmth in his voice that softened my apprehension about how the reggae artist would come across on a distant phone conversation. Yet after an hour-long interview, it was easy to conclude that Gyptian is a humble, easy-going and entertaining man on a mission.

Producer TJ White of TJ Records is at it again with a brand new rhythm that is guaranteed to rock the dancehall for the Christmas season. Dubbed 'Beauty and the Beast', for the first time ever in dancehall, the rhythm has a dual concept of light and dark. Although the rhythm has the same beat and tempo, it has two versions, a 'light' side which is more of a 'clap' and a 'dark' side that sounds more military.

The Creation of Cobra's Hit Song

Mad Cobra's Flex was an aberration in dancehall when it came out in 1992. The ultra-smooth R&B track was an exception for not only Cobra, who had made his name with hardcore tracks like Gundelero and the 'mix up' of Matie a Rebel, but also the genre itself.

The serpentine one was part of the new charge of deejays, including Capleton and Buju Banton, who were taking dancehall from the steady, rolling basslines of the 1980s into the broken up patterns on more uptempo rhythms that captured a new generation of dancehall fans. Flex issued the invitation "time to have sex, look how long yu have the rude bway a sweat".

Are All Jamaican Films Negative?

There are several Jamaican-based films, but few represent a side of the island that is non-violent, crime-free or drug-free. Even in the popular 1972 Jimmy Cliff-starred Harder They Come, Jamaica was shown in a somewhat negative light. Cliff, who played Ivanhoe Martin, left his rural community to find employment opportunities and fulfil his musical dream in Kingston. However, in the city he had to deal with corruption, drugs and crime.

Somewhere between the deaths of Bob Marley in 1981 and Peter Tosh in 1987, as well as the break-up of Black Uhuru after taking the first reggae Grammy in 1985, Rastafari retreated from its leading role in Jamaican music.

When it did resurface in the 1990s on the digital beats popularised by the Sleng Teng rhythm of 1985, the fiery proclamations of Capleton, Anthony B and Sizzla grabbed attention, with total rejection of Christianity peaking in a 'bun Bible' stance by some popular Rastafarian entertainers.

Ring the alarm, Tenor Saw is coming. Although this month marks 20 years since his death, the legacy of Clive Bright, one of dancehall's most influential and unique singers, lives on. Tenor Saw's death was mysterious. In 1988, the 22-year-old's decomposing body was found in bushes near a road in Houston, Texas. One version is that he was shot; another was that he was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. But his mentor, singer/producer Lincoln 'Sugar' Minott, said he really died of pneumonia.
